Victorian State Championships, Melbourne, 2008

Day 4 & 5 - Vic State LC Champs, Melbourne

On Day 4 Isobel continued to swim well in the longer events making the final of the 200 free and finishing 6th in the final.

Kaillan and Mitch both performed PBs in their 100 free heats. The club was also heavily represented in the 11U 100m Breast by Madelyn, Keeley, Morgan and Breanna, with Maddy and Morgan both doing 2 sec PBs. What was and has been even more exciting for the young team has been the opportunity to marshall with some Olympic stars, get some autographs, cool down in the same lane as Grant Hackett and swap caps and T-Shirts with the USA team. At times autographs' seemed to take priority over marshalling for the next event.

Day 5 and although everyone was tired, there was some more good swims in store. Isobel just missed out on the final of the 100 free, qualifying 11th and Phoebe continued her PB blitz to make the final of the SWD 50 Fly. Great effort Phoebe. The Open boys had a good blow out in the 4 x 100 free relay, with Duncan and Jarrad showing excellent 1st lap speed and Heath and Stephen ensured everyone went under 60 secs.

The 12U Boys also made the final of the 4 x 50 Free relay, qualifying in 8th, following on from there Medley final earlier in the week. Come the evening you could sense the boys were excited but wanted to swim faster and rather than resorting to changing the order of swimmers (a tactic of the medley relay) the boys just decided to improve their changeovers and swim faster. And that they did; with a lot of fast arms, the team improved two places to finish 6th. Great swims and team spirit Harry, Kaillan, Ben and Mitch.

That concludes the Open, SWD and 12/u events.  The Age Group Swimming commences on Friday 11th January for 5 days.  Good luck to those swimmers

Day 1 - Vic State LC Champs, Melbourne

On the first day of the Victorian State LC Championships Melbourne didn’t disappoint us with its scorching heat.  Competing in the outdoor 50mt pool at MSAC there was some relief for swimmers, coaches and support crew with the occasional cool breeze.

Temperatures were rising but this did not stop the Geelong Swimming Club members perform to their best on day 1 of this major event.  With the cream of Australian Swim Team having a hit out before the Olympic Trials in March there was a buzz of excitement in the air, especially when Grant Hackett is sitting on your t-shirt at the warm-up pool (hey, Liv!!)

The club was represented by 8 individual swimmers and 2 relay teams in the heats.

Our finalists for day 1 - Phoebe competing in 100 Breastroke SWD.  Phoebe did a huge 9 second PB - congratulations.  Our under 12 Boys 4 x 50 Medley Relay team – Mitchell, Kailan, Harry and Ben. The relay team was ranked 10th after the heats.  The boys managed 4 seconds quicker for a final placing of 7th overall.  What a tremendous effort for day one.

Congratulations to those swimmers that competed and good luck everyone else.
