AUSTRALIAN AGE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS BRISBANE 8-14 APRIL

A strong
contingent of twelve swimmers represented the Geelong Swimming Club in Brisbane
at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. The centre now boasts a 13 lane outdoor 50m pool,
which was used for warms ups. The pool itself provided comfortable seating and
good viewing for swimmers, coaches and parents.
While our PB count was disappointing it was not dissimilar to the average results for the meet. In fact there were some huge blowouts recorded by many swimmers from other Clubs. So overall, we performed quite well only missing most PB’s by small amounts.
Tyler Parkinson was again our most successful swimmer qualifying for the 200IM final.
He also recorded his best time in the 100m Freestyle and just missed his 50m Freestyle
PB by .02!!

Kahlia Marsh swam a huge 2 second best time in the 400IM to miss the final by .05!! We
waited in vain for a withdrawal but it was not to be!!! Life can be cruel sometimes. She also recorded her best swims with the Club in the 100 & 200 Butterfly and the
200IM in which she finished 17th..

Andy McColl was very competitive in his swims finishing 13th in the 50m
freestyle, 16th in the 100m Backstroke and 23rd in the
100m Freestyle. Although disappointed with his results, all his swims were just
outside PB’s.

Mitch Norton’s Freestyle continues to improve swimming his first 53 in the 100m
Freestyle and very fast 50m Freestyle. His 100m Backstroke was one of his
better 100’s for the season.

Eliza Kol was definitely not herself at this meet so we have ordered some tests to check
her vitals. I was very impressed with her positive attitude despite her
disappointing results. Persistence and single mindedness are the mark of a true
champion. Eliza will bounce back because of her determination and resilience.

Chelsea Rowe stepped up with a great finish in her 100 Butterfly to swim a PB. Zac
Hussain and Fraser Mahony swam perfect 100m Backstroke race plan to be ahead of our goal times at every point. A great effort by the boy’s at their first National Championships.

The same could be said for Michalea Caldow in her 50m Freestyle.

Nathan Keating swam his freestyle events really well considering his preparation was
hampered by a shoulder injury. To his credit, Nathan persisted over the past
few weeks by kicking his way through sessions. His approach is an excellent
example for other swimmers who experience the set back of injury.

James Bedford joined Mitch Norton, Fraser Mahony and Nathan Keating for the 16&U
400 Freestyle Relay. The boys placed 15th.

Andy McColl led out the 18&U 400 Medley
Relay changing over to Brock Norwood. Brock (the old fella) hung on to first
place with a valiant 58second Butterfly to give Tyler Parkinson a small advantage. Tyler extended that advantage with a 1.06.79 Breaststroke for Mitch Norton. Mitch thumped the water repeatedly after holding off a fast challenge to win the heat for Geelong. The boys finished 6th in Australia.

The relay was a fantastic way to finish off the season.

Coach
